The MFA Factory: Gatekeeping, Community, or Both?

Introduction: Workshop as Institution

Poetry MFAs promise mentorship, time, and a network. They also replicate taste, debt, and power. Which truth is louder depends on where you sit at the seminar table.

What MFAs Do Well

They build reading habits, demystify submissions, and provide durable friendships. A rigorous workshop can be a laboratory for failure—rare in public life.

What MFAs Distort

Funding inequities and demographic homogeneity calcify a “house style.” The irresistible pull of prize culture can turn poems into grant applications with enjambments.

Alternatives

Open collectives, community colleges, online salons, and fellowship models distribute risk and authority. The best “program” is a library card plus three friends who won’t let you get away with a lazy line.

Conclusion

Keep the community, ditch the gate. If an MFA is a good fit, great. If not, build your own workshop—and your own canon.
